Beetje Beter helps children
into education instead of child labour in Stung Meanchey - Phnom Penh's
notorious rubbish dump.
Beetje Beter ("A little bit better" in Dutch) interrupts the
poverty trap of child labour by sending children to school. By providing
child labourers and their families with the equivalent amount of rice a
child's wages would otherwise buy, Beetje Beter is challenging the popular
belief within Stung Meanchey’s community that education is a luxury available
only to those who can afford not to work. Once in school, children are given
educational materials, lessons and English classes.
Our assessment:
- This clearly-defined, small project achieves significant change for
its beneficiaries at a minimal cost of $600 per year, per student.
- Beetje Beter works effectively with local community networks to identify
the most vulnerable child labourers.
