ECPAT Philippines is part of a global network working to eliminate child prostitution, child pornography and the trafficking of children for sexual purposes.

Ecpat
ECPAT Philippines are currently seeking funding to help them set up a centre in the tourist destination of Boracay:

  • Funding of application to the Bureau of Internal Revenue: £685. This would provide ECPAT with certification to enable them to apply to corporations for support and to leverage much-needed funding.
  • Full funding of a Boracay pilot project for one year: £9,275

In the Philippines, current efforts are focused on creating a centre in the tourist centre of Boracay to rehabilitate those who have been victims of the local sex trade and to prevent those who are vulnerable from entering the trade. The centre would:

  • Provide preventative outreach programmes in Boracay's local communities, to combat denial, educate parents about child protection and educate children themselves about their rights.
  • Work with local authorities, including local tourism police and teachers to educate them about child protection, the identification of pimps and bringing them to account.
  • Psychosocial rehabilitation for children who have been victims of the commercial sex trade and those who are vulnerable to exploitation. This would include both individual and group counselling and therapy sessions. Programmes would be tailored to individual children's needs.
  • The centre will also provide children with medical services as necessary, educational support, food and emergency shelter

Our assessment:

  • The issues raised by ECPAT are sensitive and often denied by the communities in which they work. However their experience, proven track record of tackling denial to expose the issues, of influencing policy to bring about change, makes them a leader in their field.
  • By providing support services to address the immediate needs and concerns of their beneficiaries, as well as lobbying for long-term change, ECPAT provides a comprehensive approach.
