Fotokids works in Guatemala
teaching camera and media technology skills to young people from slum areas.

Current funding priorities include:
- US $10,000-20,000 for the expansion of their "Saving girls",
and design programs into other poor, and gang-infested areas of Guatemala
City.
- Reinforcement of their graphic design vocational training, which is offered
to young people unable to afford a traditional education in the indigenous
village of Santiago Atitlan.

Contact us about supporting Fotokids
Fotokids' goal is to break the poverty cycle affecting young people from
at-risk areas by teaching them photographic skills that lead to self-employment,
self-esteem, and leadership. Originally aimed at children who lived and
worked on Guatemala City's rubbish tip, Fotokids now works with children
from the most disadvantaged areas, and with young people at risk of joining
gangs.
The focus of the project has broadened beyond documentary photography and
now includes digital imaging, computer-generated graphic design, video,
advertising and a student-run design studio.
Children involved in the Fotokids programme are required to complete their
school education, and the charity supports them in this by providing scholarships.
Our assessment:
- The children learn practical skills that can lead to employment, and
they receive long-term benefit from exploring and articulating their experience
through images which impact others.
- Fotokids' costs are modest, and the projects can be replicated and expanded
into other areas of need.
