Off tThe Street Kids (OTSK)
provides life-skills training and educational opportunities to young people
leaving residential care in Cape Town.

The pilot will run at a cost of £35,000 per year. £15,000
has been secured for the first year of the program. Contributions towards
the total cost of the first year of the pilot are sought, specifically
for mentor training.

In South Africa, state funding stops at 18. Young people leaving care must
then fend for themselves. Many end up on the streets, their lives dominated
by drugs and crime.
OTSK is implementing a 3 year pilot scheme to help young people make the
transition from care to responsible, independent living. Support will be
given with education, skills training, accommodation and long-term employment.
Mentors, those who have themselves made the transition from residential
care to independent living, will be employed to share their experiences
and inspire positive change in participants, as well as work with children
who are in their last two years in care. The pilot scheme will benefit up
to 20 young people in its first year at one residential care home, and expand
over the next 2 years.
Our assessment:
- OTSK is the first organisation to undertake research into this vulnerable
group. Following the pilot, the model will be made available to young
care-leavers across South Africa.
- OTSK has been developed by experts in the field in direct response to
needs expressed by children leaving residential care.
- Their goal is to enable disadvantaged young people to participate in
society as independent, mature, responsible adults.
