Promoting Equality in African
Schools (PEAS) builds schools in Uganda and pays teachers' salaries for
one year, until each school becomes self-supporting.

PEAS is now seeking funding to build new schools at a total cost of £50,000
in the coming year. £5,000 is needed to construct a library and
£3,500 for a classroom.

about supporting PEAS
Since 2002, PEAS has built 5 schools in Uganda in areas where the demand
for extra secondary school provision was high. PEAS is committed to building
another school by 2010. The student capacity in each school is approximately
1,000. They are also now expanding their reach to Western Kenya.
Schools fees are low but still enable each school to become self-sustaining
within one year of being built. PEAS also trains students in entrepreneurship
and income-generating activities such as bee-keeping. Income from these
activities goes back into the core running costs of the school.
Our assessment:
- PEAS provides high quality, accessible secondary education for minimal
costs, with a 95% pass rate at O Level in the first school they built.
- In Uganda there is 91% enrolment at primary school level but only 21%
for secondary school. The need for more schools and teachers is clear.
