Themba Interactive uses theatre forums and workshops to change behaviour and prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

Haller
Themba recently recruited new actor-educators from the community. These young people, having no previous theatre experience, are then trained by Themba. The skills they learn enable and empower them to go back to the community and teach/talk about sex, HIV, gender dynamics (equality), healthy democracy, and sexual diversity. It will cost Themba ZAR 180,000 (£14,890) to provide a 12 month internship programme for these trainees.

Contact us about supporting Themba

One in five people in South Africa are thought to be infected with HIV AIDS, and 71% of deaths between the ages of 14 - 49 are caused by AIDS. Themba Interactive works primarily with teenagers and young offenders using interactive theatre techniques to promote dialogue about HIV/AIDS and to teach participants how to change their behaviour. Themba works with an average of 10,000 people each year.

Our assessment:

  • Themba works with the high impact section of the population to successfully challenge stereotypes, discrimination, stigma, and prejudice surrounding HIV/AIDS.
  • The project is mobile and highly replicable.
