The Virlanie Foundation provides support to street children in the Philippines through its residential homes and other services for children living with their families on the streets and in the poorest communities. Since its inception, the Foundation has cared for more than 12,000 children.
The Virlanie Foundation has twelve residential homes each catering for 20-30 streetchildren. These include specialist homes to cater for those in need of trauma counselling, those with physical or mental disabilities, temporary homes and a mother and baby unit. All children attend school and a supplementary learning centre helps them to catch up on any gaps in their education and prevent them from dropping out of school. A medical and psychological team attend to children's physical and emotional wellbeing during their stay and the Foundation also runs an outreach programme offering legal support to streetchildren who are in conflict with the law.
Wherever possible, and where it is in a child's interest, the Foundation works to reunite families through a reunification programme.
Our assessment:
- The Foundation targets the most vulnerable children and provides them with holistic support to rehabilitate them from trauma and enable them to begin their lives again.
- Through its services, the Virlanie Foundation provided support to 1,209 children in 2009.
